THE CATV NETWORK

Document Managed by Network Operations

The Rutgers University cable TV network, known as RU-tv, runs through the RUNet fiber ring and connecting fiber network. The OIT-Telecommunications Division acquires, processes and distributes 68 channels of contemporary CATV entertainment, educational and Rutgers University information programming from a central “headend” facility on the Busch Campus.

The Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) system architecture utilizes fiber to the building (FTTB) technology for maximum effect. This technology provides a wide bandwidth with very low noise and distortion figures. The result is that the end user views the programs in virtually the same pristine condition as viewed at the initial acquisition site (the “headend”). The design also promotes a high degree of scalability and makes for an extremely robust and reliable network. In addition to the headend, the ring employs two re-transmission hub sites, one on College Avenue and one on Cook/Douglass. These hubs have automatic self-healing backup features that make downtime virtually non-existent.
