Document Managed by Network Operations
The university currently utilizes both analog and digital Centrex telephone services for all New Brunswick campuses. These services are provided by Verizon Communications.
The 14,000+ on-campus telephone lines (extensions) are serviced by a large Centrex telephone switch in Verizon Central Offices in New Brunswick, Piscataway. The switches provide "dial tone" and connect our telephones to the worldwide telephone network for incoming and outgoing calls. A number of standard Centrex features are included on most University extensions. These features include voicemail, call transfer, conference call, call forwarding, call restriction, automatic callback, call waiting and others. Departments are billed monthly through University accounting systems for Centrex Service.
Layered on top of these Centrex services are numerous telephone systems ranging from single line telephone instruments to state-of-the-art PBX's. Support for these systems varies, as some departments manage their own systems, and some rely on support from the Telecommunications Division. This is primarily due to a decentralized approach for expanded voice services across departments and campuses.
